I am currently working on my first quilt, well first quilt in a long long time. I made my kids baby quilts but that was forever ago. I'm a beginner none the less. I used Quilters Dream Select batting in the quilt I am quilting now. It quilts awesome, no bearding, etc. But it's not that puffy, like you can't really see my quilting stitches that well. You can see them, but they don't indent or however you word that. I hope I am explaining this right.. I will post pictures of it soon. I also would like advice on how I should quilt my border on it, I will ask that question when I post the pic. But what's the best batting to use? I like 100% cotton, not sure why I just do, and I like the thinner quilts. So what's better than Quilter's Dream? Thank you much!

I've never used Quilter's Dream so I can't really compare it with others. I really like Hobbs 80/20fusible batt because I can use my iron to bast instead of pins but that is for my machine quilting. Are you hand quilting or machine? A lot of hand quilters really like the new wool and silk batting for hand quilting but it is more expensive. Charismah's uses different batts to machine quilt customers quilts. Take a look at hers and see if you like the definition if you are machine quilting. She usually tells what batt she's used on quilts.

I have one quilt with QD select weight in it. After it's washed you'll get more stitch definition. If you're machine quilting Hobbs 80/20 gives really nice stitch definition and it's just a really nice batting in general.

Most of the Cottons (80/20 or 70/30) give about the same fluff - with the exception of Hobbs which seems to give a little more fluff. You aren't going to get a lot with a cotton batting

I like the quilters dream select but I favor "low loft" looks. It does "fluff" up when washed (I damp dry my quilts and hang to dry naturally). I have used "inexpensive" Joann's poly batting on donation quilts, low loft - it does show the top quilting alot more, but I am partial to 100% cotton also.

I use W&N which is 100% cotton. The definition of the stitches seems fine to me. Particularly after being washed. My friend uses the quilters dream and it does have a wonderful 'hand' to it. Her stitching definition seems good as well. And we both hand quilt.

The Quilter's Dream is a great batt. If you want more loft and definition go up one weight and get the Request loft. I love that one.

If you want a fluffy fullness then you need a higher polyester content. Cotton is flat and the more cotton in a batting, the flatter it is. Polyester comes in a variety of lofts. High loft will give you that cloud-like appearance and feel. Low loft will be much thinner but fluffier than cotton. I think you need to experiment and see what you like best. I am a Warm and Natural cotton girl but I am moving toward the blends.

As others have said - wash it, it'll look totally different. I also am using it in my 2nd quilt.
