Default embroidery 3 dimensional

Went to embroidery club yesterday she showed us how to emb a 3 dimensional poinsetta well today I did it. don't look too bad it's not perfect. I still have to cut around it . The one way on top I was just checking it out. The flower has been cut out but not the leaves yet.

That is beautiful. I have never heard of it or seen it. What is the concept of that? Do you put new layers every time you embroider something? I love to try it. Can you please describe what's going on? I do quite a lot of crafting, sewing, etc., so maybe I can grasp it, when you explain.
