My DH has many colors of BVDs! Any cotton undergarments will work for testing colorfastness.
Deep reds and blues tend to bleed the worst. I always test those by dipping a corner in hot water - if I see any bleeding, I use Retayne before washing.

How much Epsom Salt do you use?

I've started piecing table runners for the dressers & nightstands in my newly painted and rearranged bedroom (which if I haven't said it lately, man I love the new color & yay! Took said beautiful deep purple batik to the kitchen sink and proceeded to hand wash the heck out of it until it looked like it was running clear.. then had it soak in a bucket with some vinegar and then after awhile, rinsed it, only to see yet more dye... hand washed it some more.. and more and finally when I felt comfortable enough, put it in the washer... with an extra rinse. by the end of the final extra rinse, there was no more dye tinge in the water... safe!
Dried it, ironed it, nearly in tears as I held the iron..
Yup. It's lavender and those 4 yards of beautiful, deep purple batiks will not be used for this project... at least for the front of it. I might just use it for backing at this point... but I'm saddened. I'll probably have to make a special trip out to the store to get more dark purple fabric to go in to the project but at this point, I'm hoping I can just do without :'(

You might email the company who makes the fabric and ask them how you can stop this dye release. If you get an answer, let us know, okay!

I usually pre wash and definitly batiks. Some of my batiks run some don't. One lady told me she does not prewash but when she finishes the quilt she washes it with the Shout color catcher sheets. I thought that would be O K til now. If it changes the color that drasticly, it could throw the colors off on the quilt.

You know since it lost so much of the dye, I think I'd go ask the folks where you bought it from if they were aware that it looses ALL of its color. I mean you bought purple not lavender. I'm not saying that they will do anything about it but Gee, that just sucks. Perhaps they will give you another yardage of it and you can set the dye yourself before it has a chance to bleed out?

If you are talking about WalMart - usually the fabrics I've purchased there have good manners - but one piece (orange halloween print) ran and ran and ran - I still had the receipt - and was allowed to return it.
I think a commercially dyed fabric should NOT need the use of Retayne and/or Synthropol when washed - or vinegar or salt or anything else, for that matter.
If it does, I consider it improperly manufactured.
P.S. Glad you didn't wreck your other fabrics with this stinker.
