This is also what I do. I cover every surface that my quilt will be on. Helps a LOT with keeping things moving smoothly. Also, is it possible that your stitiches are "messed up" only where you are crossing over seams? That will often cause small stitches as everything has to work harder. A tiny bit of planning for that and a minute amount of assistance while going over seams will help with that.
