I don't know if you will have enough fabric from a layer cake. You will have to do some calculation to see if you have enough fabric to make a small bargello.

There is a book out I saw about doing a bargello with a layer cake. Can't remember the name but it should come up in Google search.

I was at a quilt store yesterday and saw a pattern that said just that....Bargello from fat quarters. I didn't buy it and I don't remember what size quilt it was making....but I had the same question. Would that work??

Now, I just had an idea and googled that. Look what I found.

Now I have to go back and read it all.

There's a pattern called I Used to Be a Layer Cake. You can find it with a Google search.

This one is on my list. I love the look of the one from Annie's...such bright colors.

What a coincidence. I purchased the pattern yesterday! It is by Black Cat Creations, www.black-cat-creations.com , designed by Nancy Altsman. It offers 3 versions and makes quilts 41: x 56".
