    Default Bernina foot for Applique?

Do you prefer the number 20 or number 39 (clear) foot?

I like that the number 20 has an open foot, but I like that the 39 is clear, with the center guide.

I don't have the money, nor inclination to get both.

    Which would you pick?

(I have a different foot for satin stitch applique, so this would be for blanket stitch applique- right now, Dresden plates.)

All I have is the #20 for applique so I don't know if I'd like the #39 better. I bought the #20 when I was doing a lot of satin stitch and it does work well for that. I have used the #20 for buttonhole too but it doesn't hold one edge down as well when you are stitching over the side. It does help if the applique edge is solid because you can run one side of the toe along the applique edge. I basically use #20 for all sewing that I want an unobstructed view of and sometimes with my magnifying glass attachment.

I use #20 for applique and anytime I want to see exactly what I am sewing. I do not have the 39 so can't say about it.

I have only ever had the #20 foot...have had it for 20 years and it works wonderfully for me. Have never tried the 39 foot so don't know how it would compare. I do use the #20 foot when I do satin stitch applique too.

I have the number 23 for my Bernina. It's made specifically for applique and works great. I love it!!!

I have the 23 also- that is what I'm using right now, but I don't really like it for blanket stitch.

The dealer recommends the #39 (it is a little more expensive, go figure ... but only like $7). They prefer that it is clear, and that the front has the bridge that holds the fabric to prevent it from tunneling. They said they know a lot of people really like the #20, and it does sound like that is the consensus here...

I have both the 20 and the 39. I almost never use the #39; but I use the #20 constantly. In fact, I used it early this morning with a twin needle as I was remaking a pair of swim shorts for my granddaughter. If I could get manly one, I'd get the #20.

I hate clear feet, so I use the #20. One major advantage to having that particular foot is that it makes a perfect scant quarter inch foot when used with the neeldle one click to the right. I use it for pretty much everything I do.

My 20 foot won't work on my Bernina. So I have to use the 39. It being plastic, it broke and i had to replace it. Now I worry that ill be replacing my plastic foot constantly. Dealer couldn't explain why the 20 foot wouldn't work. My machine wouldn't recognize it.

Jcrow- What do you mean your machine won't recognize it? I don't think my machine has any way of knowing what foot is on it, so it doesn't make a difference.

Do you have one of those fancy machines that needs coded feet? Is there just not a coded #20?

Thanks all for the advice. My trip to the store (it is an hour away) got postponed and I made due with my number 23. I don't love it, but I have a beautiful stack of Dresden Plate blocks, so it all worked out!
