I have been using my Walmart Brother Project Runway machine but am beginning to think about updating - I mostly quilt but think I would also like to be able to make quilt labels and do monogramming - is this a pipe dream or is something available in that price range?

I know one person that uses the brother disney to quilt and embroidery and I'm sure it's within your price range. She does great work. I went on ebay and got the viking #1; which is supposed to be one of the best machines they ever made because I couldn't afford alot. Check your options and do a search on machines.

Id look into a used machine. You can get an older better machine for that money. I bought a machine with the label. making in mind and spent several hundred dollars more for that feature and it doesn't make anything I'd put on a quilt. You can maybe do a letter or two but then something always goes wrong. I took the classed when I bought it and it will do some nice fancy stitches but the lettering is not good at all. The only time I've used it was to put names on the hanging fabric of Christmas stockings. My machine was over $1,000. so to me that was not a cheap machine.

Do you have a sewing machine repair store near you? Sometimes they have nice used machines for a good price.

It sounds like a good used machine is the way to go. So many makers have brought out fancy new models in the past three years that there should be an abundance of used machines available at reputable dealers who've sold those new ones.

Also search craigslist.org for your local area.....if you are close enough to one that way, you can try it out before deciding.

Thank you all so much, I believe a "newused" machine will be my best bet, my only trouble is that i am in a rual area and don't really have a delarer close by to test drive machines - I will continue to check for quilters reviews of their experiences with vaious models/designs. I appreciate the posts in response to my query!

Check all your local sewing machine shops - you might find a really good bargain on a refurbished or nearly new trade in.
