Smile Binding flannel/quilting cotton wearability

I have made a baby quilt with a pieced top from cotton and a flannel back. Do I bind it with cotton or flannel? Which would wear better? I know the flannel would feel softer, but I would like this to last through washings.

Well, Judy, if I were you, I'd go with the cotton. Flannel has a looser weave than cotton and I'm thinking it would wear out more quickly. I don't know this for sure though -- perhaps others out there have first hand experience.

Cotton it is easier. The flannel is too thick to double fold. Aske me how I know.

Cotton will wear better. If you want to use the flannel it will last longer if you use bias cut binding. The reason bias is important is because the edge is not all one thread and it spreads the wear more evenly. For double fold spray starch heavly and press. I have had good luck with this method, made one like this for my daughter 38 years ago and she also used it for her (now 8 year old) daughter. Both girls have draged this quilt around and used it for years, and it has been washed to death, binding still good, quilt starting to show wear.

For sure the cotton would be easier and last longer.

How appropriate this question came up. I am making a baby quilt with cotton on the front and flannel on the back and I to was wondering what to bind with. Thank you ladies for your information. This quilting board is the greatest, just ask and you get answers.
