So do I. I have tried 2 1/2 inch double fold, but it seems to have too much material for me. I have a book on binding and it recommends 1 7/8" for double fold. I tried that once and it was way too small! With the 2 1/4" I hand stitch the binding down on the back. I don't know how well that would work if you machine stitch the binding.

Looks like I'm all alone at 2 inches! I like a small binding! I'm gonna have to break my rule soon. I want to master doing the whole binding by machine. I have not been able to send a quilt out the door yet with one of my machine bindings. Prolly the recipient would never know..but I do!

I generally use 21/4 wide binding strips and always miter the strips..

 Me too. Judges look for a full binding and it is easier to "fill" 2 1/4" perfectly.

If I have blocks around the outside, I use 2 1/4 and sew with 1/4 so I do not lose the points. If I have a solid border, I will use 2 1/2 and sew on with 3/8-1/2 inch. I then turn to the back and sew by hand. I like my bindings to be full to the edge.

For me, it depends on the quilt and the thickness of the batting, but I usually do 2.5 inches also. I recently made scrappy binding from some 2.5" Jelly Roll strips left over from other projects...quick and easy binding!

Does the back binding always get sewn when you stitch in the ditch? I have had such a hard time "catching" all the back binding. I've had to go back and resew. I've started to sew the binding to the back of the quilt, turn the binding to the front and machine sew. I've had good luck this way.
