Now that I've decided to do my Thirties Treasure quilt in brights with a black background instead of thirties colors, what is the best black fabric to get. I was told that Michael Miller Black Jet was good. Any other suggestions? Thanks!

I have used Kona black from a quilt shop and it is great. Think Jo-Ann's carries Kona too, but think we have decided it is not as good quality. Michael Miller should be good.

I have used the Kona black for my stained glass quilts, but I got it at LQS.
It worked great.

Are you saying Kona is not Kona? The Kona gotten at JoAnn's is not the same as the Kona you would get at a LQS?

I always prewash black, fabric and I just had a HORRIBLE experience with some. I usually wash fabric before it goes upstairs to my stash. I wasn't sure about this one, so I washed it again with a color grabbing sheet. Sheet came out black, so I tossed in 2 more and washed it again. Still black - so I lifted the fabric out to inspect it - my hands had black dye all over them!    Lots of bad words.   I carefully carried that C**PPY fabric to the garbage cans, draped it over the cans to dry overnight before actually putting it inside, so it didn't stink them up. I've never had that experience before. I'm kinda glad I DON'T know where I bought it, because I'd be flying there on my broom - and I'd rather not make a fool of myself. :? :? :?

I've made a few quilts with black backgrounds and I prefer a black Moda Marble. It's not a solid black, it's a little mottled and to me looks more interesting than solid black. Here's a link.

Good luck with your quilt!
