I have been using my wf for the first time this past week and I love it!
A question? The walking foot as I understand is for straight line and sitd quilting. Suppose I want to quilt around the flowers, leaves and other objects in the pattern, do I use the fmq foot?
Also, decorative stitches...my manual says not to use it in reverse or with the decorative stitches so is the fmq foot ok for this?

Yes, use the FMQ foot for leaves, flowers, etc, but don't use it for decorative stitches. Most decorative stitches require very specific side to side and front to back movement of the fabric to create the stitch, and the FMQ won't do this well. Use your regular foot, but keep an eye on the layers of fabric to make sure they don't shift on you.

I made a table topper with poinsettias & outlined each of them with my FMQ foot. It came out really nice! Good luck!

If the curves are very gentle, I use my open applique foot BUT it 'walks' as my machine is Janome and has Acufeed. If yours doesn't then I'd say yes use the FMQ foot but NOT for fancy stitches - you could break the needle if it hits against the foot, unless you have a specially designed FMQ zigzag foot! ( I have one ordered!)
