Borders Help Needed?

Do you know how to do phlanges? I'm sort of the phlange queen - I love them. Some people might not notice, but quilters do. Where your brown is, use a darker brown for a 1/4" to 1/2" phlange. That mixes up the size and gives definition to the outer edge. I usually make mine with a 1 1/2" strip, folded in half to give it some body.

I'm also designing the Warm Wishes for my much-loved Aunt who's recently had some troubling news regarding a lump on her femur. I figured the design would be a simple one to tackle and it would go together quickly. I already have the fabrics for the main squares of the quilt. Her tastes run in the pink-green-brown variety.
I'm just a little stuck on what to do for borders! I think I like a three-fabric surround to mimic the pieced squares in the Warm Wishes. I just came up with that this morning, though, so I'm not sure how my thoughts will settle.
I'm also debating whether or not it needs an entirely different pinky-salmon-rose fabric for the outermost border. Would that be too complex? Better to stick to just the four main fabrics in the quilt? Or do you think it might add something? Pink is her absolute favorite color, so I wanted that to be the focus of the border.

I'm not sure where I first saw them, but I do them as any other border. The one in my avatar is 1 1/2" strip folded wrong sides together, and sew it as you would any border. Two sides, the top, bottom. I sew the raw edges first. It just adds a little pizazz and I'm all about pizazz. I'm a quilter who likes all kinds of different processes. And I love to come up with neat border ideas.

to get a better feel for what you've designed, right click on the quilt. uncheck outline blocks and outline patches. it removes the physical division of the parts and the quilt looks 'smoother'. also, when you want to see how to cut the block, choose file-print-[then the type of cutting] and be sure to check size from quilt. then choose preview. you'll have to zoom in to see what it says unless your eyes are very good. also choose preview when you are using file-fabric yardage. that way, you are not wasting ink and paper just to view the info you might change before the final design. these are just some hints that i found to be most helpful on a regular basis. have fun with it.
