At quilt retreat 2 weeks ago we made a spray out of potato vodka & water. Has to be potato. You use 3 tbsps of vodka to 1 cup of water then put in spray bottle. Suppose to be just like Best Press. One big bottle will make a lot of it.

I bought some 'unscented' Dove body wash. Guess what? It lists 'fragrance' as one of the ingredients! It's near the bottom of the list, but it's in there! The Equate store brand equivalent is the same way - unscented on the label, fragrance in the ingredients.
I definitely agree with your first question, since some fragrances make me literally unable to breathe--as in, not just dislisking the smell but actually unable to inhale at all--so I avoid as best I can. The difference between "unscented" and "fragrance free" is important: unscented only means it does not have a specific scent, while fragrance free means NO fragrance is added. I buy only the latter. One of the most annoyingly labeled products is cat litter, with most of the "unscented" labeled ones highly perfumed. Since most, if not all, veterinarians recommend fragrance free litter, why is it so hard to find?

Luckily, I did a search for Best Press yesterday on Google. It brought me to Amazon, where I was able to buy a gallon for $9.99. Of course, the shipping was $12+ but that's still much cheaper than the retail price of close to $50/gallon. It was the Citrus scent, not one I would have picked, but, for that price, it will do just fine.

Hope your order with that shop comes thru without a glitch. They do not have good feedback rates. I've dealt with them and am one of the unhappy customers. When I used Mary Ellen's Best Press, I purchased it at Hancock Fabrics using a Joann's coupon which made it reasonable. I also add water with a 60/40 ratio (60 best press/ 40 water) and get the same results as using it full strength.

smells bother me to. After some research
i learned that companies are allowed to
put in some fragrance to mast some of the chemical odors.

I bought 2 bottles of Bounce Starch Alternative at Walmart. I wish I hadn't. I have asthma and the fragrance in the Bounce is overwhelming. I can't breathe if it is sprayed in a room I am in. I will gladly pay for Best Press. It has a light fragrance and I think it works better than Bounce. Maybe I didn't really give Bounce a fair trial, but breathing is really essential to my quilting. lol

Let me tell you ladies and gents, my DH (after leaving nursing) worked as a mechanic at a nationally known brand factory here for 4yrs before retiring. They make bleach, shampoo, hairspray, conditioner, dishwasher, and laundry detergent, fabric softer and sheets,... Anyways, trust me you DON"T want to know what goes into some of this stuff. I now make our laundry detergent and some household cleaners. SCARY!...

Jo Anne B. -- a question. Do you have to refrigerate the Sta-Flo? I remember reading somewhere that you have to refrigerate after opening or mixing. Is this true???

I was just reading through some other postings and EasyPeasy posted this formula -- it would not have an odor:

You can get very stiff fabric by mixing your own starch and it would probably cost less
than Sta-Flo. We don't have Sta-Flo here so I mix my own starch and cook it for a minute
to stabilize it. I mix 1/4 cup of cornstarch with 1/2 cup of cold water then add 1 quart of
boiling water. Stir it well and bring to a boil for a min. Let cool.
Sometimes I add more water if I don't want it as stiff as cardboard. Hope this helps
