I've tied many quilts. Usually 5-6" is good enough but you need to look at your batting, it will tell you. Yes, you can quilt and tie on the same quilt. I've done it before with excellent results. I made a tiger quilt for DD using a tiger panel and pillow panels. I tied everything except for the tigers and those I ouline quilted with black embroidery thread. It turned out beautifully and you can see the tigers from both sides.
I tie in the center, less bulk. I use yarn or embroidery floss and tie it three times then clip the strings off to no longer than 1".

I usually tie my quilts and since I am a beginner I have plenty of mistakes. sometimes I choose to tie in the corners to hide imperfect corners. Every quilt is unique and I make the decision as I go. I usually tie about every 4 inches. I also do some quilting on each one if possible.

I learned to tie quilts from some "older" quilters. They said ties should be about the width of your hand apart -- 4-5 inches and the knot should be a surgeon's know -- left over right, pull and then right over left. Cut the ties about the length of your fingertip between tip and first knuckle. These ladies make a lot of charity quilts and they use baby yarn mostly but I have used pearl cotton and a curved needle found in most notions depts.
