I was trying out Kaye woods 6 hour quilt method using some scraps… My sewing machine skipped some stitches. It is weird I am sewing often enough to hear the stitches being skipped.. My husband thinks I am weird. Anyway it is happening when I am going over seams so it would be 6 layers of fabric and 3 layers of (thin polyester) batting. My manual says this could be due to the needle size not being correct for the fabric. I am using 75/11. The fabric is thin but multiple make it thick. I am thinking moving up to a larger needle would work but would this be to much needle for when I am only working with 3 layers. I would hate to keep changing the needle every few minutes. Can some one advise me??

IMO, 75/11 is too fine for what you are doing. I usually use a size 80 for piecing just two layers of fabric. I would try either 80 or 90; these should work for the different layers you are talking about with no need to change the needle.

I agree, I use a 80/12 for everything aside from heavy stuff.

I only have 75/11 and 90/14. Will the 90/14 do with out being to big?

How these needles can be too big I don't know.

I am still new to the whole changing needles for this and that. My history with sewing was limited to I know how to do it and only did repairs or simple projects. You know sew a hem, add a patch, create a costume or modify it.
