Consider the source and move on.

Using the backing is a good way to finish a quilt. There is a special ruler-like gadget that enables you to make a mitred corner easily--i bought one but i haven't used it yet; but i intend to do several of my UFO's that way.

do what your heart tells you to do and don't let anyone tell you differently. Our mothers love us dearly and often times they thing they are helping us, but they would help so so much more to just one time say something like, "that looks really nice". but don't hold your breath for that--just take deep breaths and know that your work is beautiful and will be appreciated by those who receive it.

I bet your mother envies your ability to finish what you start. In time you will rise above her snide remarks, but I can sure understand why you're angry right now.

Know that we're all with you in spirit and urging you to quilt in your own way!
I agree and just take her attitude as an example of what
not to be.

Deanna!
So sorry that someone you care about is so critical of you. I give you so much credit for being able to rise above it and move on. Sometimes when what people say to you hurts more than it should is because you are doubting your own decision. What you are planning for your quilt is perfectly legit. I, personally, love tied quilts. They are usually more soft and fluffy. At a quilt show I attended, they were demonstrating how to tie your quilts. I was thrilled to see this. Turning the backing over for the binding is also legit. This is the way I learned to do the backing/binding way back when. You just finish your quilt and know that you have plenty of friends who support you and your decisions. Yolanda Wood River

No quilt police, remember? You do quilts your way (and mine, btw!) and she can do hers her way. Which is to never finish them. That's okay too!! Just look at all the tops you will have to finish your way, when she's done making quilt tops!! Woo Hoo!

There are people in this world that have to make others feel small by criticizing. I'm sorry that it's your mother in your world. My Mom was like that. Now she has Alzhiemers. Is in a nursing home. And her personality is completely different and she LIKES ME! She's always glad to see me, and when I take my quilts to show her what I've done she always calls the other residents to see what I've made. God rewards patience. Don't let it burst your bubble. Just keep up doing what makes you happy.

I do it all the time, but I am no pro. I guess as long as it isn't being judged for a show, you are good to go!

Well, if she's not finishing her quilts, she's not binding them either. So you're way ahead of her and she's probably jealous of that. BTW, MY AVATAR quilt is finished like that. You go girl!
