Default Chevron quilt

I am making a chevron quilt with big blocks(10”). I am sewing down the middle and cutting the pieces in half for my triangles. I press seams to the dark side. I pressed. My squares are Wonky! I used Best Press. Do I just need to use starch? I am having to cut them down 1” to get them squared up. Your helpful comments appreciated!

It's very easy to distort triangles. Even if you pressed rather than iron...
I do find that heavily starching before sewing helps. Make sure you don't tug or pull on the fabric as you stitch. I also have a Steady Betty pressing mat that helps.

When you sew down on either side of a middle line of 2 squares, you are sewing on the bias. You can get some distortion on the bias.

That is usually a good way for less distortion. I just cut the squares a little bigger to start and trim if needed when done like you did.

I did a large star quilt as a Christmas gift that used HSTs (I think they were 18”? Big!) Like mentioned above, I just planned to trim them down to size after sewing. Much less headache that way!

There's a better way to do a chevron quilt, although it's probably too late now.

How to make a chevron (zigzag) quilt without triangles
