It looks a little "off" to me because I usually see Amish quilts with jewel-toned solids instead of primary red and blue like here. But that doesn't mean soemthing is wrong.

I'm also in the .......looks-very-Amish-traditional-to-me camp!
Definitely a normal Churn Dash or Hole in the Barn Door pattern and layout and colour placement.
The sashings being black, are allowing the blocks to seemingly float, instead of being bordered up with a sashing.

Soooooooo SeasideQuilter ... what is it that you see as "off"???????

Yes, I think it's the black sashing I don't care for. If anyone has a pic of this quilt with changed up sashing, I'd love to see it. Here's the second choice we can make.

The one you have now shown is the Shoe Fly Block.
The other was Churn Dash.
Also known as Hole In The Barn Door.
A quick Google and you will soon have so many possibilities that you will be confused.

Here's two of my renditions on the Churn Dash ............

Could it be that the points are cut off on those holes

It appears to be Amish but like you, something doesn't look right to me.

That is why I don't like the first quilt at all. Very dull colors too. The second quilt is much nicer.

I really like it, but when I look at it, the large black squares seem too big to me. but I don't know much for sure,
but is there a way to make the black squares a little smaller, the blue triangles a little larger so they completely surround the black ones? then the blue will separate a little, the black won't run together with the sashing black squares? I know this might be impossible. I just like to toss out my ideas. I am just learning so I like to try. Thank you Rachel

The red and blue look sort of muted to me. Not sure if it's the picture of if they used slightly off-primary colored fabrics. When I think Amish I think brighter colors. (But I've never been to Amish country so what do I know!!? LOL)

But I like it, black sashing & all.

Where did those "samples" come from? I'm sorry, but I would not waste my time, effort or fabric on copying that first one.....although Amish quilts are simple, there is a subtle beauty and near perfection about them...not so with that first one...and really the second one, although called Amish, I don't think reflects that design much either.......JMHO
