Default Color catchers work like a charm!

There has been lots of discussion if color catchers work or not. I have just put them to the ultimate test. I washed a Bargello quilt made amost entirely of batiks (16 put of 20 fabrics were batik) that have not been pre washed. The colors range from almost white to very dark navy/purple. I tossed two color catchers in the wash and crossed my fingers. There was no staining on the quilt, but the color catchers were very blue. My next test will be with red colored fabrics. I will keep you posted. My experience with color catchers was positive.

If the colors have not been set you may have to use color catchers each time you launder. Good luck.

Dakatamaid, how do you set the color? I purchased 10 yards of red flannel, have washed three times with up to five color catchers. How do I know if it is finished bleeding?

I had some red flannel that bled and bled. I washed it about 7 or 8 times in hot water with color catchers. I also used it in a denim quilt and will always wash it with dark colors and a color catcher. Finally it quit bleeding.

To set color in fabric you need to buy something called Retayne. Read thru this link. It explains things better than I.

Thank you for your information. I certainly with buy some Retayne. I'm going to use it as backing on a red and yellow quilt for my grandson, not for Christmas but high school graduation.

I use a color catcher sheet in every load I wash, even my whites. The sheet looks dingy when used in all white load so I know at least some of the gray is not settling on my white clothes.

"Has anyone used this fabric & it bleed?" (I had a typo and spelled bled wrong )

-In this thread I put color catchers & Retayne to the test, I had to wash red fabric 12 times! I swear this fabric put my patience through the mill! haha, I finally got it to stop bleeding after 2 treatments of retayne with hot washes, and 10 cold washes with color catchers...color catchers are life savers! they work! and let you know how much your fabric is bleeding! Hopefully my trials can help some of you...~Live n Learn~
