I too have a drafting chair, never thought about raising it to make it taller. Will have to check that out. Everyone has given me such great ideas. Thank you!

I wonder if you could get the large parts out of the way and do the smaller pieces sitting down. I have always sat for all of my cutting, unless the fabric is a VERY large piece.

I feel your pain. A couple of years ago I pulled a muscle in my back and couldn't stand to cut. I purchased a table from SAMs with adjustable legs. I lowered it where I could control my ruler and cutter. I cut out three quilts while I was recuperating. I still have that table beside my sewing machine in the lowered position and use it to trim scraps. Don't give up. I hope you feel better soon.

Take breaks frequently and use ice wraps on the knee. My Dr. said to limit the wraps to 20 minutes at a time but use them several times a day. Hopefully the Dr. of PT can also give you advice. Be sure to do an exercise they have given you so you can get better soon.

I have never cut fabric standing up. I started quilting after I became disabled and standing for a few minutes at a time was almost impossible. I use my desk chair, and a large table with my 24 x 36 cutting mat. There's always room to spread out my fabric and lay out all the pieces and templates.

I had replacement surgery on one knee in Feb 2010 and found that eventually I could stand longer--but need to do my knee exercises daily still in order to be able to stand--or anything--for very long. I cut at a table that is high enough that it hits at about 3" above my navel--it's an old drafting board, but have friends that use bed risers under the legs of their tables. That also allows me to use a stool if I want and need some relief for my knees. after my surgery, it took a good 6 months to get back to normal, and now the other knee needs replacement! My PT also recommended a gel ice pad that allows me to use when the knee gets swollen--even if I'm doing stuff. good luck and don't give up.

I have a folding camping table w/adjustable legs and it works great. I set it at a lower height then put my cutting table on it and I can cut sitting down. I suggest an table w/adjustable legs. Good luck and don't give up your passion without a fight.

You could also start doing paper piecing. When I do that I'm usually sitting down with a cutting mat and a little iron on a table next to my sewing table. I also use a office chair with rollers to move from the sewing machine to the other table. So sorry about you knee problems.

I always cut sitting down. My table and chair work out just right for me to do so in the RV. I cut material folded over 4 thicknesses using a rotary cutter, ruler and mat.
