I just bought a new mat at Joannes and I put it my sewing room. It has a bad smell to it . Should or can I wash it with something to get the smell out?

Many here have put them outdoors, out of the sun to air them out.

I would take it back and exchange it. You have to be careful if you put it in the sun, You don't want it to warp.

I bought a beautiful mat a couple of months ago and not cheap either from Joann's. The smell was awful; like a skunk. I left it in the garage, then outside, tried a few other things. The smell would not go away. The sad part was at first I had layed some material on top of it; it took over a week for the smell to leave the fabric! I returned it and bought one that passed the sniff test. The lady told me they have quite a few come back for the same reason. The Brand I bought is "DRITZ". It is a great mat and was about 10$cheaper than the other one.

Who would have thought a cutting mat would have a smell. Must have been a production of tainted something or other. Ummm. I wouldn't have thought to sniff the mat before I buy. Thank-you for clueing me in.
