I understand a Design Wall is something made with flannel covering.
But, with it vertical, do your piecing pieces really stay on it without pins,
or do you have to pin each little piece?

no, cotton sticks to the vinyl without pins. That's the great thing about it! A cheap tablecloth will work, tacked to the wall. I bought really good (but overstock/cheap) marine vinyl with a thick flannel backing

I use cotton batting. Sometimes the blocks may need pinning if there is heavy applique, or if there is a breeze. Mostly mine stay there all on their own :D:D:D

There are times when you'll see it needs pinning. If I'm doing my final
layout I pin so everything stays where it should be. :D

I use felt, personally, and yes, it sticks very nicely, even with a bit of a breeze. I have stuff up there for weeks on end sometimes.

I have a felt covered design wall. My blocks stay up fine. I tried the tablecloth a few times. I wasn't impressed but batting works great and easy to push pin to the wall.

Two of you mentioned pieces stuck to the flannel "even in a breeze".
Where do you have your Design Wall? Outside????, Or do you
mean as you walk by it?

Well, I like an open window, or in very warm weather I put on the ceiling fan.
