Away from my body. But I do work my hand up a couple times and then cut a little at a time. Otherwise my ruler slips.

Away from me. Hubby always said,"cut away from yourself and you"ll never cut yourself." I think he learned this from an old wood carver!

I alway cut away from me, don't trust myself pulling a blade toward my body. If you are losing strength in your wrist you might try to find a lower surface to put your cutting mat on, (this allows you to use your arm and body movement more than wrist), also keep your wrist firm and straight - it naturally wants to flex and you lose strength that way as well.

Notice you included always standing up in your reply Noveltyjunkie. I always thought I could not cut sitting, but since I have Rheumatoid Arthritis standing very long can be a problem. I purchased one of the cutters that has the handle coming out the side and can cut as well sitting down as standing. Of course I had to get a table the right height for sitting and cutting. It's good that we can all do things differently and still have wonderful quilts.

I cut away from me...not because I knew it was correct, but it's the way that feels right.

As a "newbie" I cut toward me until I watched quilting shows and found out it was safer to cut away. Now I always cut away from me. I't a lot safer.
