I have only done one, but it was a scrappy, and I think I used about 8 fabrics. Its cut, pieced, but not joined up in the final top yet as some other projects got in the way and must be done before Christmas, I guess at least some of you out there know what I mean

So, it's taken me a while to get back into working on this quilt!! Nothing like the pressure of Christmas gifts breathing down one's neck to get motivated! ( I only have this, a baby quilt to bind, a Christmas stocking to make and 6 shrug type tote bags to make--over and above working 40 hours a week, wrapping gifts etc etc)

Here is the final layout...I used 7 fabrics, I think...I ran out of table, it will be one row longer one row wider at completion, I think...and if not big enough, a sash in that bright green. I am using red buttons and tying it, however!

I like three fabrics. Let me see if I can find my pictures....each of these has a directional focus fabric. The last two are small quilts for my mother's cat.

I am working on one right now...3 fabrics. I am not enjoying it at all, I feel like I am at the ironing board more than the sewing machine !

I did one using charm packs, I really liked the way it came out.

Is it more important that there is separation in tone/shade or more important that there be a variety of fabrics?

Please let me know your thoughts!

Thanks!
I've got one ready to cut and what I did was use the outside corners in the bigger prints.
Then, the middle edge pieces in a medium print that coordinates. The center. CENTER, square of each 9 patch will be the same tone on tone. After being cut, you'll have sets of 4 similar squares that can be reset in any random order.

There doesn't appear to be a way to edit my original post to include the resulting photo of the completed quilt... here is the thread I started at the Pictures forum http://www.quiltingboard.com/picture...s-t173289.html
Thanks for all your advice...I went with 7 or 8 fabrics and LOVE the results!
