It's a bad picture, but here's her tattoo. I don't even know if this is the quilt lay out I want - I still very much in the planning stage. I just think the five stars need to be there because they're so symbolic to her. Of course, the butterflies too.

Oh sorry, she wants king size for her bed. (Yikes - I've only made one that big before but anything for her - she's been a dear friend for over 30 years.)

Based on the picture of her tatoo, should the stars be black?

That happened with my DIL, too - I was thinking couch size - instead of a football field!

I would make the stars out of a multi-batik. MHO

This is the thread for a black and white and bright block exchange - you might get some ideas if you scroll through the whole thing.

I would PP the star behind the butterfly. The butterflies are perfect. The star should be something that will not take away from that butterfly. I love the rest of the quilt also. Nice job in planning. What a good friend you are. Keep us posted as to your final decisions etc.

As far as tattoos go, it's an attractive one.

It's definitely an 8-pointed star.

Do you think she might be interested in co-designing this with you?

I've told her when I get maybe 3 design choices I'll show them to her and we'll modify or start over then. There are just too many going through my head right now. I did just learn that her master bath is black, white and gray. (I told her she needs to add some color in there-maybe the quilt will be her inspiration to add an accent color) Is there a pattern and PP instructions somewhere for this star?

This is a very common star and you should not have a hard time finding a pattern. I suggest going to the library and checking out a book on Mariner's compass. All the instructions you could ever want would be right there for you.
