It's ironic to see this topic as I had a bag of 5" & 4" squares. I first tried to make pinwheels out of the 5" but I can't get it lined up on some of the squares so I then just started sewing the 4" squares together into a 4 patch. It scares me in a way as I have only done 3 quilts and only 1 of them was from a pattern. But somehow the other 2 have turned out great! I guess I am a "winger"!!! It's awesome to read that others are just like me!

I'm with Tartan. I have an idea and start making blocks but I always leave the ending open. That is - the blocks, pieced and sewn together look different than I imagined. I just remain flexible for the finish. That way I'm not beating myself up for coming up with such a stupid plan.

I always do it as I go.I have bought all the fabrics to match, but always change my mind several times and make many trips to the fabric store before I finish. When I start a quilt I never know how it will turn out.

Sometimes I do - sometimes I don't.

I prefer to shoot from the hip and hope it all works out by time I finish.

I usually get everything at once and try to pre-plan the whole thing.

I do only patterns so I don't ever plan a main section, am totally scared to venture into planning my own quilt, when I have enough money to get eq7 I will go there

I usually make the body of the quilt and then buy the borders, binding, and backing. I'm afraid I will change my mind if I buy it all at once.
