I've used kits for various other crafts but not for quilting. I already have lots of fabric that I want to use and most times the kits I've seen had one or more fabrics that just didn't particularly appeal to me. Plus they tend to be pretty pricey.
Besides the designing and fabric choice is my favorite part of the whole process!

This is me too! I don't think I'd ever buy a kit, or even a pattern. I like techniques that I can adapt to my own will. :-D

I've always thought that the kits were really pricey according to the amount of fabric you are buying even though my local LQS tries really hard to keep the price down. I often find that I don't like the colours chosen in the kit and there are seldom other colour choices offered. If I found one at a really good price, I would consider it.

I've only done one. I was too new (my first year) to know the hazards but the fabric was perfect. I wanted to make a quilt for my friend's 80th birthday and she loved butterflies - esp. the kind in the fabric. I bought the kit on line at overstock.com. I was too new to know about sewing on diagonals, etc. - I wouldn't attempt it now - but it turned out okay and she loved it. I actually found additional fabric (I made the quilt in my avatar with more of it) and was able to add the printed border and I added the yellow border. The kit did not have any border fabric. But all the promised pieces were there and cut correctly. I had it machine quilted at my LQS. Here she is with the finished quilt.

I have quilted for many years never used a kit till a family member gave me 10 months of a block a month kit. It was easy to put together and since I hate cutting fabric I enjoyed the process more.

I don't buy kits because I like to make life difficult for myself.

I need to know that what I make is really unique, otherwise I would be comparing myself to others.

I only buy kits at my Quilt shop, so the quality is good. I am not good at putting colors together, so all I have used are great. Being a new quilter has been great for me to use them. - Joan

BTW. When I buy a kit at a shop, I always open it up and have a worker go thru the pattern and fabrics with me. I do this to make sure I understand what goes where and that it is all there. A quality shop is more than happy to accomodate.
