Okay I do most of my pieceing by hand. But, I was wondering if you guys who piece on machines, stay stitch?

Only when I'm done piecing and only if I have a pieced outside border, like a piano key. I stay stitch the perimeter.

I stay stitch the outside border before sandwiching the quilt. I also sew the layers together around the outside of the quilt before quilting.

I did once when I knew it was going to get washed before I could sandwich it. Other than that, no.

If the seam will be crossed by another seam, no, I don't take the time. But, open edges I will just to keep seams from pulling apart while handling for sandwiching and quilting, unless I'm using a solid border. Then I also just leave that.

I would only stay stitch if I had bias edges for some reason. I have a vintage quilt top now that has bias edges. I will stay stitch before I do anything with it.
