I don't know if $75 is a good price or not - have to figure out how much fabric is included. I can't say it's too much, because I don't know what you're actually paying for.

As far as the pattern is concerned, the only way it's available is in a book, right? So if they included the pattern with the kit, that would increase the price by $25, because they'd have to put the whole book in. Then what if somebody wanted to buy the kit but already had the book? They'd be complaining because you can't buy just the fabric!

There's nothing that says you HAVE to buy a kit. If you really want to make this particular quilt, can you either figure out the pattern on your own and buy your own yardage or buy the book and buy the yardage based on the directions in the book? Whatever you decide - good luck!

That is very frustrating. We found some "kits" like that at a recent quilt show. DD found one she liked-kind of pricey for her- and was going to buy it. The lady at the booth mentioned the pattern was extra so DD put it back and walked away. Since then we have located the fabric elsewhere and she has drawn up her own pattern.

If thats how they want to sell, fine, but the kits should be marked so you know what you're getting.

To me, a kit should include both fabric and pattern. Otherwise you're buying a fabric collection.

Some people already own the book or pattern and resent or won't purchase a kit that includes it. The shop owner is damned if they do by others and damned by you if they don't. Give them a break. Just buy the pattern or book or don't buy the kit.

However, I DO think it should be clearly marked that the book or pattern is not included in the kit.

The pattern is called Island Chain, and the book is Scrap-Basket Sensations by Kim Brackett. I found it cheaper at Acebooks online, but still don't know if i want it that bad. I'm not complaining just wondering why they wouldn't include the pattern. I don't know if i could figure out the pattern myself i'm still kinda new at this, not as knowledgable as some of you wonderful quilters, but i'm learning. This pattern is for a 53x64 quilt in batiks. doesn't say how much fabric that is

And, if they included the book, the kit would be $100. It is what it is. Take it or leave it. Or buy the book and pick out your own fabrics!!

I agree with you. If it's a quilt kit it should include the pattern.

I'd buy the book and make your own "kit".

I agree with you. They can't include the pattern because they don't own the copyright. To include the pattern would be ILLEGAL and unethical. But they may be selling the book and some of their customers requested they put together a kit to make some of the patterns in the book. And it must have been obvious that the pattern wasn't included in the kit because the Poster knew that, so she didn't buy the kit. While I understand the frustration, I also appreciate, as a designer, when people respect the copyright law and other people's intellectual property.

Sure. I get it. :) I'm the same way. It's $16.01 at Amazon. You might be able to figure it out, but I can tell you from past experience that if you loved, loved, loved the sample, you are best off just splurging for the book. I don't buy kits because they aren't usually the size that I need. They are either lap size or queen or bigger and I have only two family members who want queen sized and I have too many lap size already. On the plus side, if you don't dither too long, you can resell the book and get about half the $$ you paid for it.

Hope that helps,
Stephanie
