Hi, I am new to quilting. I just completed my first jelly roll quilt using the Missouri jelly roll race directions with the cornerstones in it.
My question is how would I sew Charm Roll packs ( consisting of 20 - 5" x 44" strips, I have 3 Charm Roll packs) into a King size quilt with a finished size of 116" x 100"?? I want to insert 5" cornerstones and do a 5" inner border and a 10" outer border.
I just need to know how to sew the strips together, when to cut in half and how many times to cut and sew together? Does any of this make sense? I hope someone can help me!

P.S. I figure the inside part of above said quilt will measure approx. 89" x 73" before the added borders??

Check jellyrollfabric.net. There is a tute on "growing" a jelly roll race. Maybe you could use that as a place to start.

Karen welcome to the board, I'm sure you will be able to find the information you need here. I was confused by the title of your post since I have never heard of a charm roll before but I figured out that you are referring to the dessert roll. Is this going to be your 2nd quilt? I wish you all the luck in your endeavor.

My quick guess....since 5" is twice as much as 2 1/2" the length would be twice too......not sure about width....you will have 60 strips, right, so cut 20 in half and 20 into thirds and leave 20 whole, that should be a nice "mix". Sashes and border(s) are a great way to add inches to a top!

Welcome to the board. I am also confused at the use of the word "charm roll". Charms are 5" squares. If you are hooked on quilting, you might want to look into buying a program called Electric Quilt. I bought my used copy of EQ7 on eBay. Most quilt designs I use need to be resized and that program enables me to do just that.

Okay, here's how I do the math:

First line: 4.5 x 1376 in length, then fold in half and sew together to get:
Second 9 x 688
Third 18 x 344
Fourth 36 x 172
Fifth 72 x 86

Then, when you add your 30" of borders, you'll have 102" by 116".

The 116" may vary but the 102" won't, or in other words, the 72" will definitely be what you get if you fold to the fifth time, but the 86" could vary depending on how many strips you use. If you figure one charm roll plus one square is 43.5 plus 4.5 for a total of 48", that's the length of each charm plus square unit. If you divide 1376" by 48", you get an uneven number of units needed – 28-2/3 strips. If you cut one charm roll plus square unit to 32 inches (2/3 of a 48" unit) as a starting piece, you should come out to the dimensions I said. You will need 29 charm rolls and 29 squares.

If this doesn't make sense, let me know and I will try to come up with a diagram for you...

The Robert Kaufman Charm Rolls are like a jelly roll only there are only 20 strips that are 5" wide by 44" long. The Charm Squares Packs are the 5" by 5" squares. Anyway, that is what I have found.

Yes, this will be my second quilt, other than a baby quilt I made for my grand baby as my true "very first" quilting experience.

I am making this quilt for a gift for my daughter...I hope it turns out and I can do it justice! I will keep you all posted on the outcome. ��

I think I like the idea of 5" strips........will be anxious to see your finished top...........might start a new trend......

What else does one do with rolls of 5" strips....I don't go to LQS on a regular basis, so I don't see the "latest" patterns......
