I am going to make a king size quilt for our bed and I am wondering if wool would be too hot.

I am of a "certain age" that I get hot at night and then of course I get cold right after that, covers off and on all night. DH gets cold more than I do.

I would be machine quilting this myself, do not have a long arm but do have a large throat area on my machine.

Would I be better off with using cotton in a new quilt and using it along with my other cotton batting quilt? Will I be better off making one with wool batting and using it with the cotton batting one that I have? Or, will a quilt with wool batting be warm enough?

We set our heat back to 62* when we go to bed.

I like cotton, as I wash my bedding frequently due to hot flashes/night sweats. It holds up nicely and washes/drys well. I don't have the room to air dry things this large. :D:D:D

Sorry I can't give an opion, I have made one with wool and flannel backing, it is what my son wanted, to be warm. It is machine washable and came out of the washer and dryer in awesome condition.

I understand about the hot and cold all night long...I am right there with you!! I have read that even though wool is warm it also breathes well, so you don't feel real sweaty like with poly. Another option might be silk, it is supposed to be kind of between cotton and wool, as far as warmth. It is pricey though.

wool looks the best quilted up.It does have bit of shrinkage when it is first washed but after that the look is to me the best of all battings. the cotton is actualy warmer then the wool is in quilts. the wool isnt that thick to make a quilt hot. It breathes better the cotton does as the cotton is denser. Hope this helps.

the quilt on my bed has wool batting...and is the quilt that stays even in the summer time. the wool batt washes up wonderfully, makes the quilt 'lofty' soft and cozy but it breaths. we do not (sweat) at night, it is warm but not *suffocating*
i love working with the wool batts (dream wool) and if i could afford it would put it in all of my quilts. because it is more on the higher-price side only special quilts get it :thumbup:
my vote is for the wool, you won't be disappointed.

Hey thanks for the information everybody. I have heard that wool has received a bad rap concerning shrinking. I have also heard it is wonderful for summer.

Hmmmm I am not sure what I will do.
