I got mine from JoAnn's at 50% off. Everyone knows I have it and I lend it out a lot. It's nice to have...definitely a luxury! :)

My dh made me one, before that I used a cardboard box, put a bright flashlight inside it, and laid a piece of glass out of a large picture frame across the top. I masking taped all around the edges of the glass for safety.

That is so neat! Another idea: if you have a dining table that can be expanded with a leaf or so, you can pull it open and lay framed glass or a heavy sheet of plexiglass on the table, spanning the opening, and set a table lamp on the floor beneath. That working on a vertical, like a window can be tiring and inaccurate for some of us.

I use my light box ALL THE TIME, however, I surely didn't pay that much for it. I bought mine at Michael's years ago with one of their lovely coupons.

I would find a coupon to Michael's or JoAnn's and go there.

Use a milk carton crate, place shop light in it and a piece of glass over the top.

I have a little light that is battery operated and I put it in a plastic storage tote (clear) and lay the fabric and pattern on it and can see just fine. There are so many "toys" that I'd like to have and can't replicate by a home rememedy like this one that I spend the money on those and save space at the same time. I can use the light and tote for other things so I get more than one use from them.

I got mine at Hobby Lobby with the 40% off coupon, cost about the same. Have used it numerous times, it comes in handy all the time.
