I came across a cute 6" square block (finished) pattern but most of my projects are for a finished 12" square. I consider myself an experienced beginner... still learning!!! HAhaha

Q: Can the pattern measurements simply be "doubled" to make a 12" square - finished???

I don't want to have to experiment with fabric that I don't want to use up needlessly, trying to "make it fit" if necessary. Fabric is soooooo pricey anymore

Short answer - no, you can't just "double" the measurements.

You have to remove hte 1/4" seam allowance on all sides, then double, then add it back. For example, a 4-patch made of 4 3" squares (3.5" cut) to make a 6" block would be made from 4 6.5" blocks, not 7" blocks, to make a 12" finished square.
If you post the block, I'm sure someone on here can help you out, if you aren't comfortable redrafting it yourself.

What Krista said, plus it's a bit more complicated if you're dealing with angles, because the cutting size isn't always 1/4" plus finished size.

​I sometimes work it out on graph paper without the seam allowances. You can also cut the pattern pieces (without seam allowances) from construction paper and fit the block together.

I agree, use EA or ask a friend who has it to help you.
Yes you can resize the block. You need to subtract the seam allowances. Also the resizing works on the squares and rectangles. I haven't figured out the curves or diagonals yet.

You could always make 4 of the 6" finished block and put them together to make a 12" finished block

WOW! tons of suggestions and I think I "get" kristakz's instructions... with caution about triangles from dunster...and graph paper and 4 times the 6" block... will have to digest all! incl. website.
