My 1/4" foot with the built-in guide is worth its weight in gold.

1/4" or close to it. 1/2" is too wide. As a matter of fact when I sew clothes, going to a larger seam is difficult.

I can't use the foot with the black edge guide for some reason. It's not as accurate as using a regular foot and eyeballing where the 1/4 inch mark is (if that makes sense). But I know accuracy makes all the difference so it's worth it to get a nice clean 1/4 inch.

I also use a 1/4" foot. I also just learned yesterday that I can adjust the needle on my sewing machine to get a scant 1/4".

I have a 6 position needle on my machine so I can get an accurate 1/4" seam by moving my needle.

I have to really work at getting that 1/4 inch and I do a scant but 1/2 inch is to big

I try for that 1/4 inch too. ;) Unless you're making a quilt with just
big squares then you can get by with 1/2 inch but anything with angles
or small cut pieces might get you in trouble in the long run. Better
aim for the 1/4 inch. Besides, you would use less fabric ($$$) and
there would be less bulk for quilting. Just my humble opinion. :D

I use a 1/4 inch foot as well.

I have a 1/4" foot but sometimes it isn't true - I use a special ruler that goes under thepresser foot - it has a hole for the needle to go in that is exactly a quarter inch - one this is established, I put a stick on quide remove the ruler and I am set to go
