I just remembered something...someone please correct me if I'm wrong
but I think I read that if you are sewing flannel you need 1/2 inch seam
allowance. Is that correct?

I also use the 1/4 " foot, it is a live saver :D

I always try for the 1/4 inch. I think my machines are fine, it's the operator that has the difficulty! I made a flannel baby quilt with 3" squares and used 1/4 inch seams. The quilt is 7 years old, washed a zillion times and is still holding together.
