I've used a few different sticks, have not had a problem with any. Just make sure it say's "acid free". I've even used the ones that say "permanent" without a problem as I don't think the permanence applies to soap and water.
that said .. I have tested ALL of my sticks prior to use on scraps. I apply the stick heavily on both sides, let it dry, I'll even try a second test and iron it - then I wash them to make sure the glue washes out. So far ... not a single "permanent" glue stick stood up to soap and water (most of the time only water was needed).

There are places and times in quilt making that permanent glues are useful. There is no one-size-fits-all rule. Those that make serger quilts, for instance, frequently use a permanent glue drop to stop the tailings on a seam. Some use an adhesive permanent spray on an applique because the temporary ones do not last as long as they need them to last. Some temps just seem to evaporate away after a couple of days or so. Permanent sprays are not inflexible. Many permanent glues are used in placemats and tablerunners.

I like Unique Stitch from Collins for permanent bonding. It stays even when washed over and over. It bonds quickly and does not show through. A friend who used it for hems on her clothing told me about it a few years ago.

Don't waste your money on Roxann's glue. The tips are great that come with the bottle of glue, but don't pay for the refill glue.It is Elmer's. Just get Elmers on sale during back to school time.
Sharon Schamber uses Elmer's....it works great in piecing, doing curves and circles etc.
