firstly one must understand that not all WM fabric departments are created equal! Those stores that never lost their fabric and now have enlarged depts actually have the better fabric. THat is because they actually have a dept. mgr and store mgr that understand the value of the fabric dept. some stores that got fabric added back in do NOT have dept mgrs and usually have store mgrs that are angry that they had to give up valuable electronics space to something so unworthy of their time and payroll dollars! Ours at least has more than just the pre-cuts, which are just horrid, BUT it is never kept up, you can never find help, etc because it is not considered a dept., just a time wasting area to the store mgr. The fabrics they get in are whatever WM HQ sends them. Nobody gets to actually "ORDER" anything! I have been the stores that never lost their fabric, it is a real DEPT with a staff and mgr and it is amazing the difference. However, the prices, are rising daily! I have seen some upwards of $10+ dollars and yet the quality is still not the best. SO, basically what I am saying is, what WM might have is not necessarily the RULE of thumb or the NORM for all of the WM's! One must actually go out and visit several WM's of varying sizes, etc to really get a good /true account of what the fabric is like out there! Same with the LQS's though!

To members such as Wendsy, don't EVER let anyone make you think that your work is inferior because of where you buy your fabrics. People buy what they can afford. You already stated that you make sure you feel the fabric and if it doesn't feel right to you, you don't buy it. You have the concept down. I do the same thing if I am at Walmart, Joanns AND quilt shops. There are absolutely no rules as to what fabric you can use in a quilt or where you have to buy your fabrics to be accepted. It is wonderful that quilters have choices as to where they buy their fabrics, it is just not a requirement to buy the top of the line of everything.

I have also bought fabric online, spent $10/yd and when it came it was nothing but crap! Time restrictions forced me to use it, but will never buy from that vendor again. Shows me that when you buy online, you have to be very careful, because you can't feel that fabric.

Thanks Bella Boo, Ours must also have a contract with Fabric Traditions too. I know I can order online but I need to feel the fabric if at all possible. Thanks everyone.
