My son has a quilt that he loves. It is in the colors he chose, dark taupes and dark tan, made out of suede. It is very plain large blocks, SITD the maximum the batting would allow. The back side is a dark taupe shade of suede. Not only did he pick out the colors, he selected the fabric. I doubt if you would ever see that on a woman's bed. It matches his drapes, looks great with his dark cork floors and his furniture. The whole room looks like a room from Club Med or somewhere equally expensive. Very masculine.

that batik is an amazing quilt. curves still scare me...
i just google cherri house on images and some her designs are really cool.
the bar code i liked the best was actually quilted here in my town. i should look the maker up!

Men are hard, I have three sons and a DH! My DH first quilt is a variation of an irish chain with wolf fabric and homespuns. I'm making him a man quilt right now. I found a shop online that carries all kinds of novelty prints so his quilt is actually a pattern used for orientals. His quilt has food fabrics (pizza, hot dogs...etc.) energy drink fabrics (that's army guys fuel, trust me they keep those companies in business) then I found a horror movie fabric, casino fabric, cigar fabric. Every fabric that screamed that's my DH.
My sons quilts vary, one I'm making an irish chain with dragon fabric as the middle and the chain is red, grey and black. Another one is getting a blue, grey and black done from a pattern at keepsake quilting called monkey bars. The other one get one made from his dads old uniforms and Army fabrics.
I find fabric I love for them and then do a pattern that showcases the fabric.

my brother hates the outdoors and really would not appreciate a playful sports quilt. he's urban, way way cooler than me and has an elegance in his tastes that would indicate modern quilting as a preference over more trad designs.
i am leaning towards storm at sea in blues and greys, but i really want to fish the board first. give me your best and most favorite ideas!

I don't think the quilt pattern matters so much as the colors used. Does he live close enough that you see him often and know what colors he wears? That's what I'd use as a judge--------or look at his bedroom and follow his decorating.
Storm at Sea is probably my all time favorite. There are so many prints and batiks available that a "manly" quilt should be no problem.
