I am in Castaic, North LA county right on the 5 before you go up the Grapevine. We use to live in the Bay area. All of my husbands family are in Northern California. He has cousins in San Jose.
I am actually going to San Diego for the day on Wednesday.

We will be going down April 13 for our grandson's graduation. He is joining the Marine Corp. What part of San Jose did your hubby live in? I am a native San Josean as well as California. Have lived on So. 11 street, 14th and then 16th st, Bellerose (by Valley Fair) and off Meridian & Branham. Also lived in Santa Clara, Saratoga and Half Moon Bay. Went to Santa Clara High. This many moves is over 67 years, so it's not all that much.

I am not sure, I just remember we use to get off on Blossom Hill Rd, he stayed with his Aunt and Uncle, while we were selling our house in Seattle. His mom and dad live in Salinas on 69 between Salinas and Monterey, his brother is in Las Altos, he has and Aunt and uncle still in San Jose and several cousins, not sure how to explain where. Has an Aunt and Uncle in Morgan Hill, we lived in Livermore for a few years, he worked in Milpitas. My best friend lives in Oakland, I fly up several time a year, so we take girl trips.

My advice is to sew with whatever featherweight you are considering to be sure this is the machine for you. Some of them sew like a dream and others are "a bit difficult".

1949 Singer 221-1 Featherweight Sewing Machine w/ Case and Extras (see photos for all contents of auction). The machine's serial number is AJ219678. Sounds like something is either frozen up or jammed.

Could be a mechanical problem, or it could be something as simple as the clutch being turned so that the needle doesn't move.... the one I learned to sew on would sit there and hum until you turned the wheel while pushing on the foot feed to start it. Then it ran fine.

Horse glue is the reason for many cases of the bad smell. Horse glue was used for luggage and after years time it stinks to high heaven. Most of the older Singer cases were made with horse glue. Nothing you can do to get rid of the smell unless you get rid of the glue in the cases. It's a smell that is like none other.

I inherited my Centenial Featherweight from GM to mother to me. The machine had been stored for years and the case was very musty. I did the newspaper thing, outdoor sun, dryer sheets and finally Fabreeze. THe fabreeze did the best job but not all the smell is gone. I don't store the machine in the case anymore. Also I leave the case opened all the time and give it a couple of shots of Fabreeze about once a week. It helps but don't think anything will really work except ripping out the case lining which I may do and reline it. I know, I know, don't change an antique. It will destroy its top value but I don't plan on selling it.
