Default Fleece for batting?

Has anyone used fleece for batting? I have a large piece and it seems it should work, but I would appreciate knowing if someone else has tried it.

Also, has anyone used silk batting by Tuscany?

Thanks.

I have used fleece for batting - I have even used it in a scrappy table runner and hand-quilted without any drama. If you are concerned, maybe do a test using scrap and see if you like it. I know fleece is not for the serious, gorgeous, heirloom quilts but in my opinion for an "everyday" item, it is hardwearing and works.

I have made a couple with fleece for batting. It is cheaper than batting when you can pick it up on the clearance section, and you can quilt wherever you want. My son has been dragging is around for a couple of years and it is still in great shape.

the only thing about using fleece is (sometimes) it is a bit more difficult to stitch through- make sure you have a new-sharp needle- and if the quilt is large you may have to change needles before done- it does tend to dull needles faster than using (traditional) batts.
beyond that it makes a good batt-very warm
(most poly batts tend to dull needles faster than stitching through natural fibers.

I have made a few 2 layer quilts with fleece for the backing. with fleece that is not super stretchy, it works just fine. I particularly like it for baby/toddler quilts.

I would not use fleece for batting because it is a polyester fabric and will shrink differently than the 100% cotton of your quilt top.

everything's fine for shrinkage as long as they are washed before assembly...most new quilts out there today have polyester batting, and if you would like to use the fleece for both batting AND backing...that works well for a lot of the country and for spring and fall....

Thanks everyone, I think I'llgive it a go. Its no Heirloom, just a lap quilt.
