Default Jude and over sized blocks

Does anyone know how Eleanor Burns oversized her blocks so she can square up easier? If her block is made up with multiple pieces do you arbitrally add an 1/8 or so. Thanks, I just made a block which is not exactly perfect but if it was larger it would of squared up better.

The sad fact is that with complex blocks you cannot rely on squaring up to make up for inaccurate cutting, sewing, or pressing. That's why it is better to get your scant 1/4" seam perfected.

Wow, that sounded conceited. I didn't mean to imply that I had perfected that 1/4" - just that it's the goal. Making patches or sub-blocks bigger in the hope of it all fitting together in the end doesn't work, in general.

I agree with dunster. But I have to tell you, I recentlyfo und out that quarter inch seams are easiest on my featherweight--I don't know why, but I can get them almost always "perfect" on that machine!

El Burns patterns are very detailed and she has you square up as you go along building your block. This helps alot.
Her triangle square up ruler is a must have for squaring up HSTs.
I have never been able to use a full 1/4 in seam and have my blocks come out large enough so have always used a scant setting for my needle. My machine even has a button to push for 1/4 in seams but still have to adjust the needle a little.
Each machine is different and you have to play with your settings. I suggest you sew three 2 1/2 in strips togather and see if the middle strip measures 2 in.
