Like woody wrote, I use my adjustable folding tables and my ironing board set at the sewing machine level to hold the extra quilt while I am FMQ-ing. It prevents the quilt from dragging and pulling on the area I am working on.

All the above are good ideas. A friend of mine did her first FMQ on an older machine, just dropped her feed dogs. Use to twirl my quilt, started quilting in halfs when I did 4 king-size. Doing in quadrants would work too. Just start in middle and work side to side.
