I am about to start an appliqué quilt with rather large flower petals. Should I put some kind of batting, or stuffing under the petals or just leave them flat ? This is my first attempt at appliqué.

You can do either...if you want the look of trapunto, then extra layer the flower, otherwise just appliqué flat. Btw, is this needleturn (hand) or machine?

Needle turn. I love the "old" way of quilt making, old looking fabric and tried and true patterns.

As Geri said, you can do either. I am doing an applique BOM and plan to trapunto certain areas. I am doing the hand applique first, then before I quilt it, I will put a piece of batting under the area I want raised and machine stitch with invisible thread as close to my applique as I can get it, then turn it over and trim the batting away as close to the stitching as possible. Then I will layer and quilt.

Be careful not to over-stuff or you might have problems stitching them down.
