Jmoore-That's what the shoe box quilt thing is all about. We each picked a focus fabric, then 3 coordinates, put them in a box with our name on it and passed it around. Each person in our group made a 12 1/2" block of their choice to put in the box . In the end you get all these unique blocks, made by your friends, with the colors You chose. Now we are looking to do something different, but similar as it was Sew much fun.

Our small group at a shop met monthly and made quilts for a local homeless shelter. They always need twin size comforters. So, if you picked a specific pattern that perhaps builds skills, it is a win-win.

We did that too about 3 yrs ago-(made wheelchair quilts) we also made 72 pillowcases for donating.every yr our group makes charity items at Christmas. I was looking more for something we could do for each other

My former guild did something like the slice quilt. It was called a river runs thru it. We all made a block. We were given the river fabric. We were told where the river should enter and exit the quilt. Other than that we did whatever we wanted. It was something like this. I can't find the pictures of ours. A River Runs Through It

The group I belonged to before moving did block exchanges several times a year with everyone making the same block and and exchanging them. We also worked on doing projects such as wheelchair blankets or gowns for pediatric heart surgery patients. It was a lot of fun.

Here's something interesting I found at a Guild show in Anchorage, AK. It's called A Garden Party. Participants were asked to bring in an assortment of pre-fused fabrics. They were given one hour to create flowers in a vase from their supplies. The project was slice in quarters, and participants were asked to trade with three different people, keeping one section of their own. Homework was to bring the pieces together by using thread play, embellishments and more fusing. Participants done by the next meeting received a prize. You would not believe the results. Amazing!

Our local shop has a sew in night every month. One year they did a pizza party, were supplied with new, clean pizza boxes (kind of like the shoebox idea) and brought their own fabric for a quilt. They drew numbers and passed the boxes to the next number (one gave her box to two, etc) that person made a center square of whatever size they chose. Then the next month the box was passed to the next number and that person added a border (could be pieced or not), etc. At the end the quilt was finished or nearly so. I think they were able to add additional fabrics if they wanted. The recipient got to see it at each meeting, but had no input! Every one was pleased!
