I do a lot of it and have tried using just the fusible web, no paper backing. It gives a softer finish, but if the piece is going to be laundered, top stitch around the edges. You will need a tefon pressing sheet to use it, because of the fact that there is no paper backing. Another good product is the original Wonder Under lite--I have used it and Heat N Bond lite- and the original Wonder Under is better.
Another good tool to have is a pair of applique scissors. They have the flat lip on one side that makes it easier to trim the whiskers.
Anothe tip and then I will hush. If you are using something like wonder under fuse the fabric before cutting out. this helps to reduce the whiskers.
Some patterns tell you to fuse after cutting out but it works better the other way.
Good luck and make sure you post pictures! Everyone loves to look at the pictures of everyone else's work.

i've just done some fusible applique using button hole stitch all around. i'm having trouble setting my stitches on points - it wants to fray. how do you do it?

i should have note that i do hand applique - it wouldn't be a problem with the machine

If you're doing raw edge with invisible thread using a 60/8 needle will cut way down on the frays on the edges. I also use a pair of curved squissors to clip them off after I'm done.
