Hi all,

I am hoping to get some suggestions from anyone who has seen a nice girls/kids jelly roll or charm square pack available commercially recently.

Like everyone here, I love to quilt and never have enough time! That is especially true lately as work has been overwhelming. My brother's first baby is due in just under a month and I haven't even started to think about the quilt yet and I missed the last two family babies entirely... even my youngest son doesn't have a finished quilt! (several started, though... and then his interests change... Thomas, Scooby...) I usually spend hours picking out the fabrics, scanning them, and designing the quilt in Photoshop and then I get a new idea and half those fabrics end up in the "fabric room" (not only do I have one whole full-sized bedroom full of fabric, I've filled up half of one of my teenage sons' rooms as well! Fortunately he's tolerant of Mom's quirks. :) ) and I go back to the store and spend another few hours there and start the process over again--it takes days for me to get started before I even pick up the the rotary cutter!

I am determined to finish a quilt and have it ready for this baby (mom's "turkey timer" has already popped, it could be any day now!). But when I think about the time involved in picking out the fabrics, designing a pattern, and doing all the cutting and how much "real" work I have to get done, I just want to cry (I hate cutting!). I know that if I go out right this minute and buy fabrics that it will take me weeks to get them cut and then I'll never have the quilt done in time... it will just be one more "vapor quilt" that I promised and never managed to finish.

I'm hoping for a slightly girly/baby/young kid theme but I don't want to overdue it on the pink and baby stuff because I'd like her to be able to enjoy the quilt even if she turns out to be a dyed-in-the-wool tomboy. I'm something of a tomboy myself and I loved the non-girly quilt my aunt made for me when I was two...I kept it on my bed until I was 17 when my family gave it to the new puppy while I was away(!!! >:( ) if it was pink and had sappy things on it I probably would have been embarrassed by it.

So I don't want trucks and race cars, but I don't want pink rattles, baby chicks, and lambs either.

I'm hoping to make it about 60" x 60" finished size and I'd rather not use a commercial kit--I want the quilt to be at least somewhat unique, even if it is just a standard log cabin design.

I've just spent an hour searching the web for an appropriately themed jelly roll or charm pack but all I find for things labeled "baby girl" are pink things that don't even have nice pictures on them... they're just pinkish kits that someone decided to call "baby" to get the search engine hits... and apparently it worked, though they didn't get the sale.

If anyone has come across something like what I'm looking for (I know its kind of vague) online or in a quilt shop lately and if you remember the manufacturer or site name, I would really appreciate the info. :)

I LOVE LOVE LOVE Moda's lines by...uhhh...I want to say "Me and My Sister Designs" - Happy is my favorite...the only place I've seen it lately is fatquartershop.com for the jelly rolls/charms/layer cakes. They're girly, bright and fun. Appropriate for a baby (bright stimulating colours) but something that will grow with her because it's not super "Baby" themed. It's just pretty flowers, lots of different bright colours - pinks, purples, blues, yellows, greens. I much prefer the brights to the pastels. Check out that line...I've been itching to have a real reason to buy the whole lot! LOL

Welcome to the board!

I'd get a jelly roll (like Moda Lollipop) so you have a lot of variety, and then I'd make one of these:

http://www.quiltingboard.com/t-44258-1.htm

Fast and simple, lots of visual interest and can be used for many years.

If you use the search function at the top of the topic page, you can search fabric sites and find most of the go-to sites most people here use.

Good luck, can't wait to see what you create.

IMHO

I just got charm packs:

"It's a Hoot" by MoMo for Moda
"Lollipop" b Sandy Gervais for Moda
"Sugar Pop!" by liz scott for Moda

Sugar Pop would be darling for a girl.
and the other two would be great for either a boy or a girl.

I got both It's a Hoot and Lollipop from: Charmpacksplus.com

She is a member of this board. The last day of her Black weekend sale I believe is today.

Connecting Threads has their layer cakes, charm packs and jelly rolls on half priceright now. But you'll have to hurry. The sale ends today. While they don't have as many cute kid specific designs as Moda they do have some collections that would make nice kids quilts. I know cause I was looking at a couple. :)

I am in the middle of making a quilt for my DGD for Christmas with Moda "Happy". It's bright and fun to work with, and I agree, could work for a very young child or an older one like my 11 year old granddaughter. My only concern is that it's too girly for her, she's a bit of a tomboy!
