I am reaching out to any QB member who has made a grandmothers flower garden quilt.

I have finished my top and have some questions on how to finish the quilt.

and if you go to the picture section & search for them you will see many pictures of finished ones made by board members.

I am attaching a picture of my quilt top. The left side of the picture shows the sides of my quilt top. The bottom of the picture shows the top and bottom of the quilt. As you can see, there is a difference. My dilemma is that I would like to do a facing that would show the scallops but since the top and bottom are configured differently, I am stumped as how to face the quilt.

You can apply your facing around any shape at all. It doesn't have to be the same on the sides as it is on top/bottom. Follow the directions in the link I sent yesterday when you asked this question. The facing on the top/bottom will need to be wider than the facing on the sides since the measurement between the innermost and outermost points is larger.

Thanks for this info. I guess I thought the facing should be the same size all around the quilt. I understand now that the size facings will be smaller than the top and bottom facing. This makes sense now!

Google "Images Grandmothers Flower Garden Quilts" ~ you will see all kinds of ways that people have finished them off. Maybe that will give you inspiration. Here are 2 pictures that i have of how i finished off my aunt's quilt. I cut the sides straight and added the 3 borders. I did get the inspiration from looking at the pictures. BTW - it did about kill me to cut/straighten the edges, but i really like how the border came out. You'd never know it was added 50 yrs later.

Becca - your grandmother's flower garden is beautiful. I can understand how cutting the edge killed you, but the border looks great!

You have no idea Julie!! My aunt was so pleased when I gave it to her! I had no desire to do all the little points on the hexagons. I was going to snip those off and straighten the edges out to some point.

Kathy - you have a "straight" edge on the one side - you can fill in w/ the hexagons to "straighten" the other sides.

As I said - google the quilt and see all the different ways people have finished them off! But, it may make your head explode!!
