Grandmother's Garden Quilt

Hey Girls
May I make a suggestion? I am in the process of making the grandmother's flower garden right now. I have seminars that I must sit through (ugh) and having something to do with my hands makes the time fly by.
Get you some fat quarters (or actually a 1/4 yard of off-the-bolt fabric would work just as well. Pick colors that go together. Make a few
"blossoms". That will give a feel for the project without putting too much into it. Then you can get the "pavement" or "sidewalk" fabric when you are ready to put them together. The only fabrics that need to be the same are the 'pathway' and the centers; and even the centers would not have to be the exact fabric.
In my pattern, the pathways are joined point to point with dark green diamond shapes in between. Sorta looks like grass growing throught the cracks in the sidewalk!
I spent my time watching the Olympics and cutting hexagons, marking hexagons, cutting fabric, and sewing blossoms together. Its amazing how much you can get done with just a few minutes here, and a few minutes there.

PS I am using a template that I cut from plastic. (Not as expense laden as using individual paper templates). If you do that, it is extremely important to mark the dots, so that you sew from one dot to the next. Believe me!!

This is a very good tutorial on english paper piecing for the GFG. I to am in the process of doing a GFG, and used the english paper piecing method. It is very accurate. I think someone here on this board used the plastic "patties" but I cut my hex's from paper. (Okay, I'm cheep!) I copied them from a site I found on the internet. It is a great take along project. Hope you have fun with it.

I am NOT a vendor. I am a person with parkinson's.. I go to as many quilt shows for vendors. I ran across a vendor that has thick plastic one half the size of game playing cards, hexigon size, can deflect a hand sewing needle cheat for the "Grandmother's garden" style quilting. I will post a site. I have 3 sepparate quilts now.. I did find I need to square off the design. The sawtooth edging in the picture is very difficult for me to bind.
Quilt Patis by a woman in the German Villiage area of Columbus Ohio. She has multiple size. I used one and one half inch side dimension for the quilt example. If you are doing one for a bed or throw, I suggest that size. they come 40 at cost of 17 or 18 dollars and is it suggested to by two packs.. try it. then but another is you like. Google and she is there.

The grandmothers flower garden is the ideal project for you. One of my favorite quilts that I made was one for my grand daughter's wedding present that I hand pieced and quilted.

OH Barb that is so much work. I really like your idea of sqauaring off the quilt.. I do feel guilty. Think of all those ladies in the 20 patient enough to bind them as they are..

I think though I might stick to printing off the hexagons here online and past them to some old file folders I have here in my office. I will be recycling at the same time!! :) Right now I am also saving saving saving as this may be a very busy and pricey few months ahead of me. Between making and buying Christmas gifts and possibly buying a house!!! Not to mention Trevor and I are hoping to take a little long weekend getaway this month or next to the west coast of the island... Thanks for your suggestion all the same!!! :)

Barbsbus.. your granddaughter's quilt is GORGEOUS!!!
I am getting anxious to start mine now. I think I might pull my fabrics this evening. Our Thursday night Stitchin' group is starting up for a new year again tonight and I plan to work on my mystery quilt I did here early this summer. I'll take a little break from that during the night to pull my colours. I'll post them once I decide. I think I want to go with controlled colours rather than various colours for this one. I am working on a scrappy quilt now with making lots and lots of crumb blocks!!!
