Machine binding at mitred corners

Need some help with sewing binding. In the past, I always sewed the binding on by machine, folded back, mitred the corners and hand stitched it down. I can't figure out how to sew the mitred corners if I machine stitch it to the back. I've only done this one time and after I finished machine stitching, I hand-stitched the corners closed. If I didn't, they were "open" on the diagonal part. Is this as clear as mud?
Do you leave them open? Do you stitch and then backstitch down the diagonal? I'd appreciate any suggestions.

I leave mine open on the diagonal. But I think that I use a narrower binding than most. I cut my binding at 1 inch and sew to front at 1/2 inch and then fold over to the back and sew the seam from the front catching the back seam.

I know, clear as mud! Hope that helps!

Me too!! This is the only way to bind a quilt in my opinion.

Eddie has a tutorial on here about how he sews binding. I know he avoids hand stitiching it, so maybe it would help you out.

I love Sharons method of glue basting and Eddie's for machine sewing the binding :D:D:D

I have been using Sharon's method for about 6 months, and it has transformed how I feel about bindings...I love doing them now! And I pretty much always hand stitch them down. I used to be able to say I always hand-sew them, but recently I machine sewed two table runners! I used decorative stitching, and I rather like it! I still prefer hand-stitching though, but it's not always possible. Lots of people have arthritis and other hand and/or eye issues that make handstitching painful or downright impossible!
