Default Elmer's School Glue Questions.

I am getting ready to glue baste my first quilt. It's not too large, 50" x 60". I have 2 questions.

1. If you "set" the glue with your iron does it still wash out? I have used Sharon Schambers binding method and it uses the iron and now I am worried it won't wash out. Don't want to do that to the entire quilt.

2. Do you use an occasional pin to keep everything from shifting, especially if you are only quilting part of the quilt, leaving in the machine for a few days, then returning? I FMQ on my DSM.

I was going to test the glue thing myself but know you all can save me the time.

It all washes out. I never use pins at all. I just did my first binding with glue. It's so nice not to have to stop for pins. Also when gluing layers, it really helps to have an extra pair of hands. I have done lap quilts by myself but I wouldn't tackle gluing a full size alone. Hubby is a great accessory here.

Yes it does wash out . I pin the corners but on a larger quilt all the edges just in case they catch. I have found it is best to leave over night to dry. Iron doesn't always dry ever section.
Let us know how you get on with the s Schambers method please?

I have already done the Schamber binding method. What a breeze. I think it saved me several hours and the binding was one of my best. I learned from her You Tube video.

I too tried this method on a small sample. I dried the glue with my iron but it left a faint shadow on my solid fabric. If it had been a print it would have been fine. Also drying with the iron on polyester batt is a no no.

Mine has always washed completely out even though it didn't look like it would when I was working on it. I also used that purple gel washable school glue and that scared me, but, did wash completely out.

I have used Elmer's Washable School glue on polyester, cotton. 80/20 blend, 70/30 blend and wool. It has all washed out without any problems - I wash in warm and rinse in cold with Color Catchers. I have let it air dry on accasion but I mostly iron the glue to set it so I can flip the quilt over and then let it dry somewhere in the house overnight. I might have 5 quilts completely drying around the house I have done a quilt as large as 120x120 also.

I've used the Elmer's School Glue with and without the iron-drying. Both wash out, completely. For binding, I use the iron but for the sandwich, I just let it air dry.

I heat set the glue and it completely washes out. Also, if you need to pull apart a layer for one reason or another, just damped the fabric layer and it loosens the glue. I never use pins anymore.
